I recently conducted UV-Vis spectroscopy on zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and obtained a peak at 365 nm, which seems accurate. Following this, I performed FTIR analysis, which showed two peaks: one at 771 cm⁻¹ with an intensity of 95% and another at 916cm⁻¹ with an intensity of 84%. However, there were no peaks in the 400–600 cm⁻¹ range.
For context, I dried the sample and then calcined it at 500°C. Could anyone help explain why there might be an absence of peaks in the 400–600 cm⁻¹ region? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!”
This may be due to several factors related to the calcination temperature and the drying conditions.
Since the peaks you observed are at 771 cm⁻¹ and 916 cm⁻¹, they are likely associated with Zn-O bonds, though shifted from typical positions. These could be due to slight lattice distortions, surface modifications, or changes due to calcination.

ZnO synthesized in nanoparticles is sensitive to some surface modifications and oxidation reactions due to its high surface area. However, surface-related vibration modes may weaken as surface modifications decrease after calcination. Especially in small-sized ZnO nanoparticles, the FTIR signal of these vibration modes may remain low.
