Guns vs. butter?
The FAO estimates that about 815 million people of the 7.6 billion people in the world, or 10.7%, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2016. There are 11 million people undernourished in developed countries . Children are the most visible victims of undernutrition. The global military expenditure was $1676 billion, about 2.3% of the world’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP)..
Every one out of nine people do not have access to clean water today. 2.5 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation, and every minute a child dies from a water-related disease. Annual global spending on education is 52 billion a year which is 3.2% of global military spending in 2015.
War was constantly followed by death, hunger and thirst, and health issues. It was a dilemma which could not be prevented if war broke out. However, this condition does not mean there is no solution.
The easiest thing to say is to prevent war itself from happening. I know that is not a solution people wants to hear. It just like a utopia that everybody knows. What I want to say is that the issue was not the only crisis affected by the war, but it occurs in more than half of the world's, even there is no war. It also affected by instability (famine), and disasters or weather changes (earthquake, flood, or drought). It has transformed into a global crisis.
In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which have 17 main missions, one of them is to "Ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all".
Despite being the global agenda, every country has responsible how to assimilate themselves into national blueprints, policies and strategies based on facts, capabilities, levels of development and priorities. It's included on how the spending on this issue.
I'm realized that in 2020 report's found the progress of this agenda has been out of tracks. Nevertheless, the UN keep improving the support to meet targets for achieving access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all by 2030.
