Does Lumerical allows for calculation of the field profile for both the optical and the RF electrical fields ? COMSOL is powerful for that and allows for optimization of the fields overlap, as well. Is it possible with Lumerical ?
You can combine both modules of Lumerical FDTD (Optical) and Device (Electrical) to simulate a slot waveguide modulator. I think it Lumerical is better than COMSOL, since COMSOL is not good at the simulation of 3D photonic components.
If you do both optical and electrical simulations for a modulator, Lumerical is a better choice. You may find a couple of examples related to optical modulators in the website of Lumerical, for instance, grahene based slot waveguide modulator, 1D photonic crystal nanobeam cavity modulator, etc. If you want to design a high speed electrode for your modulator, you might use COMSOL or other RF related software (e.g. HFSS).
Dear Ke and Kaleem, I thank you for your suggestions. Actually I should care of designing the whole photonic modulator, including the high speed electrodes. But I wanna start the evaluation trial of Lumerical as everyone is telling the best about it. Thanks again. Cheers
I am not sure dear Stefano , if the trial version of Lumerical could help you to make such comparison but as Lumerical too is more specialized so good luck on that
Lumerical is the best choice for your case. And it is supporting a lot of options to the beam profile and the effect of electric field on your modulator. Finally, involving the 3D solution ( FDTD ) will let you discover more and more.
