I am trying to simulate the effect of earthquake on a tall structure in Dubai via applying 10 percent of gravity loads in horizontal direction. The simulation shouldn't be very accurate but at the same time its approximation level must be acceptable. Would "10" percent be safe?
The horizontal earthquake accelerations in Dubai, as reported in literature range from a low value of 0.05 (5% of gravity) to a high value of 0.15 (15% of gravity). However, many PSHA based methods assured that the value may never exceed 5%. So, 10% is much safer. Read the enclosed paper.
10% maybe good, maybe insufficient it depends on the type of building, the soil etc. You may just use the international building code to resolve your problem: https://municipalgateway.abudhabi.ae/_data/ADC2014/AD_Building_Code/index.html This one is for Abu Dhabi, mayber there is similar also for Dubai emirate.
Dear Stoyan, Many thanks for your reply. In building codes, it is not mentioned the methods of approximation and rough analysis. I need the percentage factor for a research project in which the site could be anywere in Dubai. The structural analysis in the research won't go through details and it would remain in preliminary stage.
For approximation you may use the value of the PGA multiplied by the reduction factor for your building type.

Hi Madhavi, Many thanks for your reply. The paper you sent is about "rock sites". Are its results applicable in non-rock sites as well?
The paper Dr Gali provided is a good cornerstone for estimating PGA. The results are not generally not applicable to soil sites, you need to apply modification factors. How to do this you can see in ASCE 7-10 or the IBC for Abu Dhabi. Also as you are dealing with a tall building, you may need to use the 2475 years peak and spectral accelerations which are: PGArock(2475)=0.09g, Sa(1.0sec-2475)=0.06g.

Thanks again. The site isn't in Abu Dhabi. It's in Dubai. Since I'm not a structural engineer, I'm not so familiar with the formulas you mention. For a part of a case study simulation, I'm making a rough model using Karamba. In Karamba, the only way of defining earthquake effect is to add a horizontal factor to gravity.. I need a safe and acceptable number. Honestly up to now I couldn't conclude from your answers, what that number is.
If you need just a number, choosing 0.12 will be reasonable for a tall building on non-rock site.
