No - your citations are safe. They are linked to the unique doi reference. As long as that remains - nothing changes.

So even if the one citing my paper did not mention the DOI in his/her reference list (as some researchers ignore the DOI as you know) I would still have the same number of citations after the change?

Hi Ghaith,

Yes - nothing changes. Most citations, in reference lists, still don't have the doi. The likes of GoogleScholar etc work backwards - initially using authors, titles and journal names to find citations. This is why you sometimes find queries on the likes of RG where people say they are cited - but it's not their work. Doi gets rid of this - but is not always available. I assume that will change in the future and doi will be king to avoid such mix-ups.

As long as DOI's are same it's recorded as same citation without changes.
