Mediterranean get on average 600 000 T plastic/year and we consume some 5 gr plastic (micro- plastic particles) per week, the equivalent of a credit card
Best biodegradable product to replace plastic depends on metabolic pathway, chemical reaction and thus on type of microorganism and on their enzymes for biodegradability

Plastic is used for many things, so why would our addiction to plastic need to be replaced by a single other product - such wouldn't question quantity of use (e.g. do we really need plastic shopping bags? instead of just replacing them w a 'new' product) ... Each use of plastic might better be reviewed: is it necessary to use plastic here? If it's necessary, what might be most appropriate, perhaps local source for such?
According to my opinion the answer would be very complex because plastics are used in very different ways and according to their use they must possess some characteristics. It is the same with biodegradable substitutes for plastics. You will need many of them according to their usage and requested characteristics.
