How do you feel about setting word limits as a requirement in publication or even in post graduate thesis or dissertation writing?Are you comfortable with it?
I realize that there are technical or even "commercial" justifications for journals but there are cases like graduate thesis in which this does not, or rather "should not", relate!
Is it justified that scientific endeavor is tied to non-academic limitations?

The scientific journals usually contain a certain number of papers in each issue. The journal has to limit the number of words in a article so as not to exceed the number of papers that are included in each issue. I am not bothered by the limited number of words required in an article, but rather from the minimum number of words allowed set in an article in a scientific journal.
As to theses and dissertations, there is usually a range of number of pages permitted for a MA or Doctorate oeuvres, between 60 to 350 pages depending on the discipline. In some disciplines the dissertations could be as short as 20- to 30 pages.Nice.

Very few journals accept papers in the range of 4000 words...
"*Brevity is the soul of wit*", Shakespeare says. The more we pump in the content, the higher the chances of losing it's flavor. Yes, the challenge lies in fitting into the framework.
One can consider explaining/eloborating it to the extent that s/he wants, in detail, in the platforms like Blogs, where there won't be limit. There are world famous blogs.
The Journals have some regulations for title and abstract in the number of words but for the IMRAD depends of the instructions to the authors included in each journal

Nirmala S.V.S.G , thanks for commenting. As you know, the requirements for paper submission is set beforehand by the journals even before the paper is deemed original or otherwise or am I missing something?

However, I wonder how many blog-published articles have been cited in peer-reviewed journals. True that knowledge would be disseminated but how about the author's rights in being recognized as being academically active in his or her discipline?

Generally there should not be word limits to theses and dissertations, and it seems that the various disciplines are limiting itself "by nature", that is, they vary in style and requirements. In computer science a dissertation could be 30 pages long, while in history it could be 300 pages.
There should be word limits to avoid people writing to less or too few. For example Engineering Journal in Thailand wants 8 pages of two columns. If it is less they reject.

It depends on the university requirements and on the discipline where the work is done. My dissertation is in the social sciences and the Research Authority in my university instructed me to write between 60 (minimum) to 300 (maximum) pages.
