Elsevier is launching a new open access journal which will accept articles across all disciplines.
The as-yet-unnamed journal, which is due to begin this year, is designed to have a "streamlined, simple and intuitive article submission and publication process,", with authors able to track submitted papers throughout the submission process. Developed in collaboration with the research community, the journal will be updated with new features and services based on feedback.
Dr Claudia Lipp, a former editor at Nature, will edit the journal. Elsevier hopes the submission process will be sped up by the use of the publisher's abstract and citation database, Scopus.
Lipp said: "We invite the research community to be our collaborators in innovative publishing. Researchers know best what they need in terms of publishing options and requirements, and we have the technology that allows us to implement new features and services based on their feedback."
Philippe Terheggen, managing director of Elsevier Journals, added: “We’re in the business of supporting researchers to advance science. The new journal embodies that mission. It leverages Elsevier’s full potential for the benefit of researchers, by combining quality content with our technological innovations that enable broad content visibility and access, and by facilitating sharing and collaboration."

Purely "theoretically" speaking, why not publish in this new journal. But what disciplines will it cover, how often will it appear, and a very practical question - what will be the page charge?
It will be great for Latin-American researchers that the new open access Elsevier Journal publish papers in both English and Spanish languages. This will bring us not only visibility, but the Elsevier's quality.
I don't really get it: What's so new or better about this, compared to existing open access options, like PLoS One, which is also multidisciplinary and dedicated to simplifying the publication process?
I'm not sure if I will/would use this Elsevier journal. First, there are the "ethical" considerations of publishing with Elsevier (supporting and cross-financing the current subscription-based publication model, which is flawed in many ways). Second, as Vladan stated, it will take some time to see how it develops and if it's worth anything.
