These tips for student communication in e-learning environments seem useful.  Perhaps you could use these in your online classes.  The web site is www.geteducated.com that has a great deal of information concerning all aspects of online learning.

By the way, since this area of education is now firmly established, isn't it time for one term to be settled on?  Distance/online/e-learning are the most common terms.  For me, "distance" doesn't work so well because some of these courses are offered in the same city where the students live.  Using "e" is also not quite right.  Online is probably the best bet as it sounds better with the various uses:  online university, online education, online teaching, online learning, etc.  "Computer," "digital," and similar terms are not specific enough.  What do you think?
