Back in the late 1970s, the US EPA did an extensive study showing that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were principal contributors to aquatic resource contamination by WWTP generated antibiotic resistant organisms. It then removed all traces of this study from its database and was reluctant to discuss the topic. We, as a scientific community, lost a lot of ground because of the non-action by US EPA, thus it is critical that this topic/project receive active support.
