It is pretty widely accepted that one of the major surface traits by which people may be described is a dimension of negative affectivity and responsiveness to stress. This trait is usually called Neuroticism, the name it was given by Hans J. Eysenck (who first described it about 65-70 years ago). "High N" people do not necessarily suffer from any sort of mental disorder, but they are more vulnerable to developing many such disorders (anxiety, depression, somatoform, etc.) when under stress, because they react strongly to adverse events and take a long time to recover.
