Since Tesla overcame Edison in the War of Current, and given the fact that up to now, for electricity generation the focus have been on centralized power generation, AC was preferred over DC.
As the world is changing, utilizing modern methods for generating electricity, including PV systems, as well as emphasizing on distributed electricity generation, is growing. will the world again witness another current war?
Dear Aslan, yes I think we are passing through this challenges, the advantages that the AC used to have are no longer unique to AC and the world changed. DC/DC converters are more efficient than DC/AC inverters and you can regulate the level of the DC voltage at any value. I can summarize some of the driving forces toward adopting DC distribution systems:
1- Most of the renewable energy are inherently Dc, for example PV panels, fuel cells, flywheel, super capacitors and the storage batteries.
2- The percent of the electronic devices loads has increased considerable in the last few decades.
3- The emergence of the plug-in electric vehicles.
4- In DC distribution the power conversion stage are less and more efficient.
5- The Data centers are internally DC loads.
