you can use it in order to investigate the amorphous materials and composite materials also. in case of amorphous materials, the peaks of XRD pattern broadening so you can to consider them for amorphous phases.
You can also use XRD to study the structure of liquids, gases, polymers.... It's not just for crystalline materials.
Hi Lawrence, is this still called XRD...i.e. diffraction? I thought these are scattering techniques...

XRD can identify the crystalline materials and It successfully study the nature of the crystal structure of liquids, gases, polymers.... In the same time We can identify the formed phases of the the examined crystalline samples only.
On the other hand, XRD just tell us that the sample has an amorphous structure, but it does not tell us about what about its phase???
I have faced a problem, which how can I differentiate between the different phases of non crystalline iron (III) oxides?
How can I differentiate between the different amorphous phases of the iron (III) oxides? what is the simplest and suitable way that can differentiate between: Alpha-Fe2O3 , Beta-Fe2O3 and Gamma-Fe2O3.
If any one has an answer to this question .. Please tell me what is it???

You have to make phase analysis, or some diffractometers have their own databases. They can make you a quick phase analysis if you request. Or second choice, you will do by yourself: Programs like Maud, Fullprof, GSAS help you to identify crystal properties, refine your lattice parameters or calculate the weight of mixed phases in your sample.
