I understood ingested D2 and D3 are reflected by 25(OH)D and do not understand why this paper uses 25(OH)D3 to refer to cumulative blood levels of vitamin D.
There is no water soluble vit D, whether vitD, D3 or D2. Both are fat soluble
The general name for the public is vitamin D, usually vit D3 is meant (cholecalciferol) being the animal/human variant. The vit D2 (ergocalciferol) is of plant origin. The vit D measured in the lab is mostly 25OH vit D3 or a mix of 25OH vitD3 and 25 OH vit D2, together also called total vit D.
The actual active component in our body is 1,25(OH)2 vit D3
Thank you, Jos--I understand what you've written. The author additionally wrote this to me: "25OHD3 is less fat soluble than vitamin D but I was using it exchangeable with 25OHD although 25OHD2 is measurable as well in the serum and increases with plant supplementation."
