I think it's because of internal reasons (e.g. temperature-sensitive ori) in plasmid itself and natural reasons (consume lots of resources in cells and probably digested by protease).

I would like to express my opinion.
Bacteria (Lactobacillus casei (Shirota)) has c.a. 12% bacteriophage (our unpublished observation).
HepG2 has 6.6% virus, and Hc has 4.7% virus, 10.0% bacteria and 3.2% plant (please see file; HepG2 fucoidan).
Therefore, the severe battle between aborigines and immigrant virus to get the hegemony seems usually to be occurred inside the host cells.

Hi there,
Plasmid loss occurs only when it is not essential for cell survival (ie. when there is no selection pressure).
