I have been searching for information on how to induce differentiation in SH-SY5Y cells (epithelial to neuronal), and have discovered several chemical agents that can achieve this. Out of all the chemicals I have come across, Retinoic Acid appears to be the one most people have used to achieve differentiation in this cell line. I was wondering if anyone here could provide their input as to why they chose to induce differentiation in SH-SY5Y cells using Retinoic Acid, and if you used something else instead of that, why did you do so?

I know this old but I'm going to answer this anyway. RA differentiation of SH-SY5Y is known to increase the expression of several mature neuronal markers (e.g. Synapsin I, Synaptophysin etc). Here's a more recent article on this: https://www.mdpi.com/2504-3900/2/25/1577/pdf
