Has anyone knowledge of yield/fracture criterion in aluminum face-sheets of honeycomb sandwich panels?
The face-sheets are a fairly ductile aluminum alloy, and the core is hexagonal cells, the walls of which are another aluminum alloy. The face-sheets are about 0.040 inches thick, and the core is about 0.625 inches thick.
Both stress reports and articles from the literature use the max or min principal stress compared against the ultimate tensile stress as a failure criterion, i.e. the max normal stress criterion. The max normal stress criterion is known to be non-conservative with respect to the max distortion energy (von Mises) and max shear (Tresca) criteria for ductile metals. The max normal stress criterion is used only for brittle materials.
Does the aluminum alloy in the face-sheet behave as a brittle material?
