The name M. consanguinea is indeed much older (by Schiffner 1900). If it is a taxonomical synonym of M. temperata, then it must be used. See also : https://www.binran.ru/files/journals/NSNR/2011_45/NSNR_2011_45_Potemkin.pdf and New Zealand Journal of Botany 42(2):271-292, 2004 (thus before 2008).

The following kept two taxas, but underlined they are closely similar:

Thank you Marc. But If I understand well these three references don't explain why both should be synonymized. The third one even explicitily retains both as separate taxa.

You can ask to Rolands Moisejevs too. Probably he know more about these species.

Thanks a lot! I think I am getting closer.

But I believe the synonymy of Metzgeria temperata and M. consanguinea is not substantively discussed in Stotler & Crandall-Stotler (2017). They refer to: Hill, M. et al. 2008. A Checklist and Census Catalogue of British and Irish Bryophytes. Unfortunately I don’t have this book either... Do you perhaps also have a copy of the paragraph on M. temperata/consanguinea in this booklet? That would be great.

Hill et al., p. 142: "[9] The treatment of Metzgeria temperata as a synonym of M. consanguinea is guided by So (2003) who considered that the differences between the two taxa 'are exceedingly small'. Mrs J.A. Paton (in litt., 2008) has examined an isotype and other material of M. consanguinea from Java, at the request of Dr R. Grolle, and found no differences between the latter and M. temperata from the British Isles."

it is mentioned:

“Metzgeria consanguinea Schiffn. (=M. temperata Kuwah.)

However, Jan Kučera sequenced M. temperata from Japan and M. temperata from Europe and they are not the same, but what should the European taxon be called? M. consanguinea is different, and 'true' consanguinea probably does not occur in Europe (L. Söderström pers. comm. July 2018).”

So perhaps we still have to maintain Metzgeria temperata in Europe?!.
