I think because the Zr atom greater than Zn atom, and when Zr content increase cause an increase width of the composite ZnO/ZrO2 materials,Also because Zr atom bonded by two oxygen atom compared with Zn atom where bonded in one atom of oxygen and you can observe that from periodic table. I understand correctly you mean the width of the ZnO rods which are imbedded within a ZrO2 matrix? For ZnO usually the 111 direction is favoured to result in rod like structures, see publication for example XRD’s. PH and specific absorbance influence the growing and favoured dissolution in this direction.
