we studied the photocatalytic degradation of 3-CP under UV light. it was surprising that its UV-Vis spectra have changed. what is this reason? Please help me. in the below spectra black line is 3-CP and red line is 3-CP (after UV light on during the finding BiOCl catalyst)?
The spectra of 4-CP doesn't change but 4-CP is degraded by photocatalysis to products that have a different spectra.
Photocatalytic degradation of m-chlooro phenol may be converted into quinone. You can isolate the product & take IR to see the presence of ketone.
For the photocatalytic degradation of 3CP under UV light forms chlorohydroquinone( CHQ). Further hydroxylation of CHQ forms hydroxyhydroquinone which further rapidly decomposes and forms carboxylic acids

This is not strange. In photocatalytic degradation of aromatic organic compounds, there are mainly two mechanisms. One mechanism is cleavage of aromatic systems to produce CO2, H2O, and … . The second one is production of different intermediates before degradation reaction. After that, the intermediates undergo degradation reactions to produce final products.
3-CP are not degrade under normal condition. You have to add Sodium Borohydraide solution to make charge transfer faster than normal degradation process.
