The major advantage of using diesel as a backup electricity supply is that it can be ready for any time 24 hour in the day.

Its installation cost is relatively low.

It needs much less area for installations.

It is noisy and needs fuel continuously.

It needs massive maintainenace.

The pollute the environment by producing CO2.

The PV generators are more cost effective in the long run as their running cost is much less than the Diesel generators. However they need much larger installation costs.

They need less maintenance compared to diesel as they are static generators.

The recent cost of installations of PV generators becomes much lower and affordable about one half dollar per peak watt.

They need large installation land.

They need battery storage to make them available for 24 hour per day.

It is so that the PV generators became in the recent time very attractive in house hold and back up electricity generators.

Also gigawatt PV stations are already built in some countries world wide as a source for renewable energy.

For a long time PV Solar power have been very expensive to own even today storage of solar power is costly but possible to have. There is just a need of mind shift to realize that PV solar power can be a long term solution although it will be in a fair competition with diesel.

Hence, you can now do your techno-economic assessment comparing the PV system with the battery-bank system. Still, the main question needs to be answered: Is it economically viable or profitable to install PV systems in the residential sector, considering the low electricity tariff prices and the absence of government legislation or incentives tailored for renewable utilization in East Africa?
