I do not understand why editors should be excluded as authors from their journals. This would limit their possibilities to publish papers, and it will become more difficult to find editors. As long as their papers undergo the same peer review process as other papers, this should be o.k.

I agree with Dr Wolfgang R. Dick that editors should be allowed to publish in the journals they edit. I can understand your concerns that the review process might be less rigorous. In all instances I have seen, reviews and reviewers were applied as for any other paper. The reviewers were blinded to the identity of the author (which, of course, turned out to be the editor).
Joseph C Lee and Wolfgang R. Dick have made good points. One side good editors are important to any journal. On the other hand, Some of them take advantage of their powerful position. The question: where is the border and how to keep the incentive to have good editors and prevent them from abusing their position. Actually, this question also applies to leaders of countries and organizations. There is no good answers. Many solutions were proposed and attempt to solve it, none seem to have a solution. I just point out an extreme cases. E. Sparrow the former director of NSF. Some argue that many of the papers were accepted because of his position. I never found a person more hard working from him. Many times I saw him on the last bus leaving the department in Minneapolis going St. Paul. He was known for putting in 18 hours a day for 40-50 years. Once he fall into the elevator pier while it repaired because he was so tired. He was the advisor of about 20 students foremost of his time. I as the most irritating person would ask him about importance of some papers he wrote, only to get the answer that the papers were important only because the computers were weak at the time. In retrospective, yes some of of his papers might be useless, but no one can say that he did not make a significant contribution to thermo fluid. So there is a point he got some papers that should not be published. But in totality he deserves it. Who can judge these cases?

I had an additional thought, along similar lines to what Genick Bar-Meir was saying. In a similar way - and just generally rather than specific examples - I know that the editors of the journals I frequently read are prominent in their field and I would expect they would have high amounts of publications anyway. I would expect them to publish in our field - so hence, in those journals.

Thanks for contributing to the discussion. Yes, indeed its a difficult situation for editors too. However, I personally feel, Editorials, opnioin articles or breakthroughs may be more suitable for Editors for publising in journals where they Edit. However, to avoid the conflict of interest, Editors may avoid publishing original research articles or atleast reduce the number papers in the Journals for whom they Edit.
