CuAl2O4 and ZnAl2O4 nanoparticles have been studied for photocatalytic activity. While performed with methylene blue dye using visible light I observed degradation (color difference) but I could not find any degradation with Rhodamine B dye. Why Rhodamine B doesn’t show any degradation? Kindly help me out
There could be two possibilities. It could be either due to
- the differences in their redox potentials (if the degradation occurs by a redox mechanism)
- the presence of reactive/susceptible groups in the materials which are prone to attack.
Both these dyes are cationic and have more or less the same UV-Vis spectra. I think the difference might be due to the presence of sulfur in methylene blue which is easy to oxidize, whereas no S atom in Rhodamine B.
Do you also see degradation in the absence of visible light?
It could also be photobleaching. How long is the sample exposed to visible light and what is the concentration of the dye (as asked earlier)?
in which media do you perform experiments? Maybe in water you do not have a real solution and particulate dye is much slower to degrade.

Everybody explains well. Redox potential, concentration, pH, etc. factor. I must suggest you just do not study dye degradation because the scientific community now not interest with this. Good Luck.
