A presentation is useful to introduce the info to students. It can reach 200 students or even 500 students, depending on class size, hence it is efficient. But whether learning will occur depends on whether students have read up beforehand (to have the 'constructivism links') , and whether students will organize this info, after the presentation. The concept of 'notional hour' seems to have dwindled away from the minds of students, and academics.
Teaching / learning traditionally involves a kind of interaction between a more knowledgeable individual and a novice who has an insufficient knowledge on something. Of course in language tradition , presentation is followed by practice and production. On the face of it, it seems that presentation is the first step upon which other stages of teaching and learning are founded. Numerous attempts have been made to eliminate the natural face to face presentation of the learning input, but none has been successful in replacing it to-date.I personally believe that the main reason behind the survival of presentation in the educational scene lies in the fact that it is closer to the realities dominating human nature. Presentation almost invariably requires on-line cooperation and especial rapport between individuals engaged in the process of teaching/learning. Consequently, educational techniques, no matter how innovative, have to be consistent with man's natural tendencies.
I agree with Dr Miranda and I also feel presentation will help students seat up in studies knowing fully well they will account for whatever they have learnt
Why presentation is the most powerful tool for learning?
Presentation software like Powerpoint etc are powerful tool for learning because:
it can hi-light / focus on key points for learning.
it is dynamic i.e. can be animated with visual & audio / sound effect capability to deepened student's understanding.
it can be saved as viewer file that can be self-executed without the need of the presentation software to run the file - student can re-run the file many times for learning purposes at his / her own timing.
it can be saved as read only slide (password protected) / converted into pdf file easily for secured distribution to students.
if presentation software / notebook has internet connectivity like access to external websites, YouTube etc, the presentation file can be embedded with external hyperlink to click & connect to Internet website, YouTube etc. - this can enhance / relay student's learning experience.
Presentation file with speech can be easily integrated & upload to YouTube as video clip - this can expand to more students' viewing & learning.
However presentation tools are merely an enabler whereby students' learning also dependent on other factors like how solid the content / substance of the presentation, how the teacher present the slides, how much knowledge / experience of the teacher etc.
There's one new great tool that I'm using recently to build my research figures and presentations, it's very easy to use and it has a gorgeous cientific illustrations database, you should give it a try:
