It is seen in the recent time in the news across the globe relevant to develop and deploy the autonomous vehicles on road as soon as earliest. Although, it is a step-by-step process in which we have to spend billions of dollars to develop fully autonomous vehicles. And even after the development of such FAVs, still, there are some questions remain open such as (a) What about the efficiency of the FAVs? (b) Who is the owner of the vehicle? (c) What about ethical and moral issues? and so on. In these circumstances, is it more useful to concentrate on DATs rather than FAVs?

Before addressing the topics above, I am computer engineer who does like onboard computers and prefer to control my machines. Why? I can change the course of several actions and I want to know the type of data and decision-making is in the system.
(a) What about the efficiency of the FAVs?
The answer depends on the set of metrics you choose. If your criteria are going from point A to B within a certain time, then it is fine. However, in real life there are several constraints...
(b) Who is the owner of the vehicle?
Probably, in a short run, people and organizations. In a long run, corporations and collectives. The concept of Common-Well Being (CWB) sounds promising.
(c) What about ethical and moral issues? and so on.
Well, here comes the danger. Particularly in a morally-ill society as ours... It will become ugly before it becomes balanced. Humankind history has plenty of examples since the Stone Age.
(d)In these circumstances, is it more useful to concentrate on DATs rather than FAVs?
Both are necessary. However, I am completely against a vehicle that cannot be stopped or controlled by at least a person.
During space missions and disaster management, sometimes you have communication problems. Some sort of action must be taken otherwise the vehicle may run out of energy. The vehicle needs to take care of its health and find a way to resume its mission.
Another problem is if something happens to the people inside the vehicle. A sentient vehicle can just drive to a safe place.

Ankit Patel I think the developers also sometimes underestimate peoples wishes and will to own and to control a vehicle. There is a deep feeling of freedom in driving a vehicle by your selves. The autonomous vehicle will probably be safer for the driver and the surroundings, but that has never stopped humans from wanting their own control. DATs handle these issues in a way, I think, more compatible with human «nature».
