Why Nickel can act as a better counter electrode than platinum in liquid chromatography-amperometric detection?

Nickel, as a counter electrode, provides a constant baseline for liquid chomatography-amperometric detection while platinum fails to give a stable baseline, why? is that related to its atomic or mass number?
