Why it is recommended to use HCl to acidify sea water samples to preserve trace metals before analysis? and not using HNO3, or any other type of acid?

According to literature I found that before analyzing seawater for trace metals (Zn, Cu, Cd ,,,,,) the metals in the seawater sample are being preserved using HCl around pH 2. Specifically when using NTA resin and preconcentration method. My question is why HCl is used for this purpose instead of other acids?
