I prepared TPVA in water. Reaction is catalyzed by HCl and reaction time is 8 hours at 80 degree under atmospheric conditions. After reaction time, i precipitated it with acetone. Then, the product is not soluble any more.
I think that loss of solubilty indicates that cross-links have been formed in the thiolation of poly(vinylalcohol). I wonder why HCl has been used as catalyst instead of H2SO4 which is widely used for such reaction.
I think H2SO4 may oxidize the mercaptopropionic acid. Because when I mix concentrated H2SO4 and mercaptopropionic acid in the air atmosphere, an exothermic reaction occurred and i obtained a white precipitate.
