they don't detect low level parasitaemia particularly for P.vivax.
there is also a problem called Prozone effect seen in patients with high parasite counts explained in these links

Low parasitaemia as discussed by McGready. other causes may include poor storage conditions, RDT kit stored at very high temperature (above 28C) and relative humidity could lose potency. Diagnostic efficiency of malaria RDT has also been reported to be poor in pregnant women due to sequestration of malaria parasites in the placental thus lowering pheripheral blood availability of the parasite during diagnosis. Poor diagnosis could also be responsible and use of expired products
Not an answer, but a point to consider:
Could the presence of fetal hemoglobin in blood may lead to reduced chance of ICT positive?
More the fetal hb% less is the chance to detect malaria by ICT
In congenital malaria, frequently ICT is negative(our observation)

Malaria diagnosis using RDT literally based on Biomarkers. and No biomarkers for Pan kit. certainly, there is a need to explore other biomarker which can overcome the challenges with existing biomarker like thermo-stability, deletions, low sensitivity, persistence of antigens etc.
