why is the network of ifa that mushrooms create necessary for the entire ecosystem? is it true that it allows plants like trees to communicate with each other? can someone direct me to some scientific material? thanks in advance
The primary effect of the mycelium is the created increase in surface area - and therefor the ability for water and nutritient absorption. The secondary effect is that ecosystems benefit because water and trace metals can be transported to the trees and between trees through the effect of fungal mycelia.
Fungi are generally saprophytic - they break down organic matter. As Matais commented, some fungi also form intimate and specific associations with plants.
