A fluidized bed reactor is a vessel partly filled with bed material (sand) and additives (if any). As pyrolysis is endothermic in nature heat is supplied by heating the walls of the reactor and by injecting hot fluidizing gas (often nitrogen).

For pyrolysis on a lab scale, I will always advocate for fixed bed reactors. While fluidized bed reactors are often described in glowing terms, they are very complex and problematic to design, operate, and maintain. In contrast, fixed bed reactors are more simpler and straight forward. Refer to the book Biomass Pyrolysis by Prabir Basu for more insights on both reactors and many more. Hope this helps...

The fluidized bed is found to be widely used and the most suitable gasifier for coal and co-gasification of coal and biomass. Since they tolerate a wider particle size range, which is crucial for co-gasification residues depicting a flexible and robust technology.

The co-gasification of coal and biomass in a free-fall reactor both the higher blending ratio (around 70 wt.%) and the relatively lower temperature (around 600 C) are more promising for synergy effects during the co-gasification of biomass and coal in the free-fall reactor like fluidized bed gasifier.
