In the 2° book, chapter 42, paragraph 6 : "speed of clocks in a gravitational field" he affirmed:

"since energy has the gravitational mass the photon has a mass not a rest mass and is attracted by the earth. In falling the distance H will gain an additional energy..."

There is at least one experiment affirming that there is no energy exchange between the gravitational field and the photon. The perceived variation of photon frequency is due only to proper time differences between the source and observer, it is only apparent.
