The recent surge in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in India, particularly in Pune, Maharashtra. Maharashtra has reported 225 Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases so far (22 March 2025). The outbreak has resulted in 12 fatalities according to state health authorities. Cases are reported from multiple areas, including Pune Municipal Corporation locality, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and Pune Rural.
Likely cause:
Water contamination. The National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune has found Campylobacter jejuni in stool samples of patients with GBS, suggesting a possible link between the bacteria and the outbreak. Steps from authorities:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has mobilized support for local health authorities to manage the outbreak effectively. The Maharashtra state government has intensified surveillance efforts and is coordinating with hospitals to ensure adequate treatment for affected patients.
Having said that, both local and national governments need to conduct investigation on the long-rooted GBS susceptibility of the Pune inhabitants.
