I wanted to format the references of a paper according to a style that lists references as footnotes at the end of each page. I thought Chicago 16th footnote style should be doing but it is not working. I tried almost all versions of Chicago in my endnote library and none are displaying footnotes. They rather list there references as normal and at the end of the document. Anyone with any ideas on where the problem is? I have so many references and I am trying to save myself from creating footnotes manually.

Kirubel Manyazewal Mussie It is work, but you must try a similar method. Basically, Footnotes or endnotes are used in Chicago style to refer to parts of work in the text. To reference a source, use a superscript number following a quote or paraphrase. Citation numbers should be listed in chronological order. Footnotes must appear at the foot of the page to which they relate.
Fatemeh Khozaei thank you for the tips. I used chicago before and it had footnotes and it is weird it is not working for me now. Yes, I create footnotes manually but that is just too much unnecessary work. But I will do that since it seems like I dont have any other option.
If you are using Microsoft Word, click on References, then Add Footnote. I'm not sure what you mean by "used Chicago" because Chicago is a format, not a citation generator.
You can either update the version or import it to the current version manually.
I work with this stuff all the time. What program are you using to generate footnotes? Is is a bibliographic manager like EndNote or Zotero?
William Badke thanks much! I am using endnote. I chose the chicago 16th footnote output style for my references I have in word and I am not seeing the footnote. This citation style is supposed to give you the references in footnote (correct me if I am wrong), but in my case it is just listing the references at the end of the document. That is the problem.
But now I just exported all my references I used in my manuscript to zotero and inserted the citations in my word one by one from zotero. That was a painful process but it is okay. I liked zotero and the chicago style in there worked as it is supposed to (it had footnote).
Hayder Ibrahim Mohammed thanks for your suggestion. Version of what? If it is endnote then i have 2020 and I guess that is the latest. If it is about the chicago style version, I also tried 17th edition (and other versions as well) and none of them worked.
EndNote has to work with a word processor like MS Word. You download the Write N Cite app from Endnote and then locate it at the top of the MS Word document. When you click on the EndNote link in Word, there is an Add Citation link.
William Badke thanks. Yes, endnote works well and I have been using that for some years now. That is not the problem. My problem is with the chicago style. All the other styles work fine - I usually use APA, numbered or Vancouver and they display the references in word as they should. But now chicago style is not working properly (by properly, I mean it is not displaying footnotes because that is what it is supposed to do).
Perhaps you need to edit the style in EndNote. If you haven't done this before, I recommend contacting Clarivate. They are extremely helpful. https://support.clarivate.com/Endnote/s/?language=en_US
