Why does the USA(such a democratic country) not offer PhDs by publication yet Great Britain(a country still recognizing royalty) does? A PhD by publication allows someone without prior degrees to potentially be awarded a doctorate based on originality and rigor of research. Degrees may be the USA's hidden classism.
An interesting point or points although your view of the UK as a non-democracy seems wilful. I think a review of PhD's would be a worthwhile discussion as to what degree (sic) they represent the received wisdom of the group coupled with career based impetus.
Incidentally, many important historians did or do not have degrees in the field but this is an area that rewards excellent research skills. The better the research skills, the better the result.
Many academics (PhD holders and heads of department) have made a complete hash at understanding the present war with a number of important (sic) figures providing immense histories on, for example, what Putin said and wrote as if his utterances are the same as reality, presenting no appreciation of propaganda and its extent or that certain leaders lie. The excellent work has come from people outside of the relevant university departments-the Russian departments see Ukraine as part of Russia and therefore their work is pointless-but from historians in other departments such as War alone or with a career in diplomacy. Hill is one of the best but she worked in Russia and met Putin.
On this matter but on others careers and power can exert diminishing rewards where knowledge is concerned.
@StanleyWilkin I want to go to the UK(maybe via online) to get a PhD by publication. I live in the USA where one must spend ridiculous time and money to get a PhD. The only requirement for a PhD should be enough original and rigorous research.
