Why does the L2 edge in NiO's SXAS data split into two peaks?

Please ask experts to help answer, why the NiO L2 edge data will split into two peaks in SXAS.

Dear Tao Zeng ,

please have a look at the discussion in the section

'In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the nickel and iron L- and K-edges'

at the bottom of page 3 (in the .pdf) about the split of the L3 and L2 edges of Ni:
