Even if I understand that some heavy metals such as Cd are more mobile than Pb, as an instance, I am still not sure why the Casparian Strip does not work avoiding the uptake of Cd, and whereas, this heavy metal can be translocated to the fruits and grains of plants. I mean, if the Casparian Strip really works, it means avoidance of entrance of all heavy metals, or is there any relationship with the valency of the chemistry of the particular metal? The Casparian strip only prevents ions to reach the stele and therefore the xylem and the further translocation aboveground. Uptake of heavy metals means internalization into the symplast or root cells, which occurs all along the way of ions into the apoplast till the capsarian strip, particularly at epidermis. The internalization from the apoplast into the symplast is mediated by transporters that are more or less specific of ions. Cadmium is internalized by transporters mediating the internalization of Zn, Fe, Ca. See the following references for more details :

La endodermis contiene una cinta de material impermeable que se conoce como la banda de Caspary que evita que el paso de exceso de agua y elementos disueltos a través de células endodérmicas y de esta forma regula el paso de nutrientes y agua que llega al xilema. Cuando un metal pesado entra en una célula vegetal es inmovilizado por sustancias orgánicas quelantes (fitoquelatinas) que forman iones complejos con el metal y evitan la fitotoxicidad de éstos, siendo otro camino que al formar los quelatos estos pasan por la vacuola y ahí se alojan. Las plantas capaces de crecer en suelos con altos contenidos de metales lo hacen excluyendo iones potencialmente tóxicos de su sistema de raíces. La habilidad de tolerar la presencia de metales pesados está determinada por el nivel de variación genética de cada especie vegetal. Asimismo, los patrones de bioacumulación son muy variables entre especies vegetales como entre los diferentes elementos minerales, por consiguiente, no siempre existe una relación extrapolable entre ellos.
