Could it be because of financial reasons or because they prefer interacting with patients, as opposed to being in a laboratory? I mean, I realize that medical doctors such as pathologists are busy running diagnoses in their labs, and that it's possible to be an M.D. P.hD., but I still think it's a valid question.
I'm interested in reading your responses.
Perhaps STEM graduates go into medicine because they can interact with the people they are helping, as opposed to researchers who are finding treatments/understanding mechanisms of diseases for people they may never meet.
Also, physicians are using methods that have already been tested for many years (or are participating in clinical trials for drugs that have been researched for a long time) so their methods may be more effective at solving the problem as opposed to researchers who are starting from square one and don't necessarily KNOW if their hypothesis will be supported (which can be very frustrating when your results don't show what you wanted/expected).
In terms of the financial reasons, I don't necessarily think this is a valid reason because while doctors may have higher incomes than scientific researchers, they also tend to accumulate greater debt (since PhD's get a stipend).
