Why do we used 70% of methanol for extraction of total phenolics but not Hexane or petroleum ether?

Considering that phenolics contain hydroxyl groups they are more soluble in polar solvents (methanol) than in nonpolar ones (hexane, petroleum ether)

Zervoudakis and Zhang are perfectly right. I would use less toxic ethanol/ water solutions. Check some of my papers. Hexane and other non polar solvents can extract other compounds such as carotenoids etc.
because glycosides are polar compound required a polar solvent. Hexane is a non polar solvent. The general rule in extraction is like dissolve like
