Good evening everyone, I just started working on my end of year thesis. The project is about in-situ characterization of batteries using xrd, raman and sem. Since I am new in the battery field I have some questions. Why do we need an anode with high capacity and low voltage and a cathode with high capacity and high voltage to have a good chemistry in a battery? And what do we mean by the large stability window of an electrolyte?
Those are simple questions. You are encouraged to read some textbooks about the fundamentals of batteries.
How to increase the energy density of full-cell batteries?
Energy density [Wh/kg] = Working potential (WP) of full cell [V] x Gravimetric specific capacity [Ah/kg]
WP of full cell [V] = WP of cathode - WP of anode
According to the above equations, to increase the energy density, we need the high specific capacity of both the anode and cathode and higher working potential of a full cell or in other words, increase the cathode potential and decrease the anode potential.
The electrolyte is located between the cathode and the anode. Therefore, it should have electrochemical stability toward both the anode and cathode. In other words, for example, the working potential of the cathode is 5 V but the electrolyte is only stable until 4 V. So how that kind of battery can be operated? More than 4 V, the electrolyte will be decomposed and lose its properties.
