Fast current control loops protect the STATCOM converter from high currents. Using only voltage control loops (as in case of a grid forming control scheme) would allow currents to flow freely and additional current-limiting control loops would be required additionally.

Markus Pöller Thank you Markus. Current loops are there to limit current through the converter. is there any role played by this current loop in synchronizing the DSTATCOM at PCC? or Voltage loop is enough for synchronization purpose?
