I deposited um range thick porous Au films on flat Au substrates. During XRD studies, I notice peak splitting in all the peaks for porous gold. Is this because of present of two phases or because of reduction of symmetry of existing phases?

Check k-alpha 1 and k-alpha 2 radiation which represent two characteristic energies of x-ray photons during transition within the electron shell. Another reason may be the phase transition during synthesis or check the symmetry changes in xrd due to beam splitting.

Firstly
About K alpha 1 and 2: This is not the case for me, because of the following:
· The k-alpha1 and k-alpha2 peak doublets are further apart at higher angles 2theta
· The k-alpha1 peaks always as twice the intensity of the k-alpha2
· At low angles 2theta, we might not observe a distinct second peak
Second, about phase transition: This is not likely as well. The stable phase of gold under ambient conditions is FCC type. I don’t know if there is any other stable form which can coexist under ambient conditions.
Third one i.e beam splitting, I dont know about it as of now. Please do send me some literature if you come across.
