I'm heading up a new research group and will be doing IP-centric work for the first time in my career. While I was in the more lax world of academia, I happily used Word to keep digital notes, and colleagues have had success using PowerPoint.

Now that I'm concerned about being able to record development of new IP, I am exploring ELN options. I don't see the advantage of adopting a new software platform when I & my lab members are happy with the ubiquitous software we are accustomed to. If all we want to do is keep a record of when various advances took place, why can't my lab members simply upload their current lab notebook to a repository every week? Would this type of evidence be less robust in a legal sense?

I understand that most ELN software has other additional features that some may value, but I only want to create a digital log of when our work took place. Is there a minimalist (yet air-tight) way of doing this?
