I was handed a very young male Common Pipistrelle that had crawled through a window and become dehydrated. He was not yet weaned or flying and as we were not able to place him for the mother bat to pick him up, I looked after him.

I fed him baby dog milk three times a day. He put on weight, but never matured. Although he exercised his wings, would run around the floor and carried out 'press-ups', he never grew teeth.

I tried to wean him by mixing some mealworm 'insides' within the milk, and he appeared to enjoy the mixture. However, after 6 weeks he deteriorated over about 24 hours, and died.

These pictures were taken on 6 July 2018 but when he died about a month afterwards, he did not look any more mature.

Does anyone have any idea about this? Usually, young bats like this one have matured into juveniles.

Thanks for any help,

Mary
