What is the rationale behind using the term 'Latin American music' as a comprehensive category to comprehend and classify a wide range of musical styles in Latin America? To what extent does this categorization simplify the diversity and complexity of musical traditions in the region, and what challenges might it pose from an academic and cultural perspective?
Andrés, if you read Portuguese, one of my PhD students (with my collaboration) tried to answer this question a bit analysing protest songs (link below). Short answer: the term is highly problematic from a decolonial point of view, but it has got its advantages in terms of geopolitical articulations, creation of a strong regional block (maybe alternative to US hegemony in the region?) - and music (as every other form of art and symbolic production) is always related to geopolitics. In the paper below, we have opted for the use of inverted commas, to flag the fact that we do know that the term is problematic, but that nevertheless it still makes sense to use it. We also discuss the work Mignolo and others in order to justify our choice.
