The electric field is interacting with all objects in its field, hence, by placing the two plates close together forces the interaction between those two plates, thus concentrating the power.
This is not in my research feild but I get through Mostafa Mashmoul answer it looks to be reseonable one

A capacitor stores energy in the electric field between the two plates. If those plates are very far apart, the field gets crappy real fast.
