Calcofluor white (CW) is recommended to stain plant cell wall that has B1-4 Glucan linkage. On the other hand fungal chitin has Different composition. Thus, I was wondering if anyone can give me some explanation why CW can stain chitin.
Calcofluor white can stain cell wall that have B1-4 and B1-3 linkage. Fungal wall don't contain only chitin (N-acetylglucosamine with B 1-4 linkage). They also contain some B1-3 linkages. It could explain that calcofluor can stain fungal cell wall.
