It is believed that brucellosis causes fewer spontaneous

abortions in humans than it does in animals because of

the absence of erythritol in thehumanplacentaandfetus

Human brucellosis or 'classic' malta fever is usually caused by brucella melitensis, whereas brucella abortus is primarily found in cattle.

However, all brucella species occasionally cause spontaneous human abortion, but the overall rate is much lower than in cattle.
