I noticed that plant genes are in general GC richer than the intergenic portion. If I understand rightly this is a common feature of many organism and this difference in nucleotide composition is exploted by the gene search algorythms in order to annotate the open reading frames (ORF). I was wondering what is the evolutionary force that induced this kind of difference in composition between coding and intergenic sequences. Any of you can advice some paper?

Thank you very much for your help.
