Nafion mostly used as a binder during the preparation of electrode (deposition of catalyst on the surface of electrode) and also act as a protective layer which resists the chemical attack. According to DuPont, only alkali metals (particularly sodium) can degrade Nafion under normal temperatures and pressures.
I've applied Nafion solution as binder for the silica nanoparticle-based platforms. It has shown good performance as a binder and didn't affect the enzymatic reaction of the fabricated biosensor.
Nafion can also be used as a membrane (electrolyte) in fuel cell systems because it is ions selective and thus it helps to reduce the crossover phenomena.
Medha Shirish Gijare, Basically, we dilute the Nafion to 1% using ethanol and make a composite with a catalytic material in the ratio of 1:10 (Nafion: cat.).
